Seoul Academy was established in 1983 and sits on Samseong-ro 64-gil in Gangnam-gu, with classes capped to keep teacher attention high. The middle school combines the standard core with Chinese, computing and electives aimed at preparing students to leave Korea for high school in the US.

Parents who choose Seoul Academy tend to value the small-school feel and the fact that teachers can reach every child, particularly those needing catch-up support in English. The school is not the right fit for families looking for the broad sport, arts and IB programmes that SFS, SIS or KIS provide. The pattern at Seoul Academy is closer to a tightly run feeder school for ambitious Gangnam families with a US destination in mind.

  • Seoul Academy is repeatedly grouped with Seoul Scholars and a handful of other Seoul programmes that Reddit's Korea expat communities label as fake international schools. Categorisation, not insult: the schools are not registered with overseas accreditors as US or British schools, and are licensed locally as hagwons rather than as international schools under the Korean Ministry of Education.
  • That label affects what the credential is worth at the Korean end. Real international schools in Korea are foreigner-only and carry MOE recognition; programmes registered as hagwons do not, and are off-limits to most international-teacher recruiters.
  • The schools in this category often do still run AP courses and place students into US and overseas universities, which is why some expat parents consider them despite the registration.
  • Direct reviews of Seoul Academy specifically are scarce. The few public ratings are short, multilingual one-liners with high stars but very little detail.
  • For families whose hiring or visa rests on the school's MOE status, this is the central fact to verify with the school directly.

Considerations

  • Hagwon registration vs MOE-recognised international school. Reddit's Korea expat threads consistently group Seoul Academy with hagwon-registered schools rather than with SFS, KIS, SIS, Chadwick and the other MOE-recognised internationals.
  • Some pathway to overseas universities anyway. Commenters note hagwon-registered schools can still teach AP and send students to US universities, which is what keeps them on parents' lists.
  • Thin direct review pool. Public ratings amount to a couple of short Spanish and Portuguese one-liners; not enough to characterise daily life on campus.
