Modern School Barakhamba Road
Historic CBSE school at Connaught Place/Mandi House. ₹1.7L tuition.
In brief
Founded 1920. Sprawling 25-acre campus near Connaught Place. CBSE. Co-ed, day school with a small boarding wing. One of the oldest and most established names in Delhi schooling.
What it's actually known for on the ground: legacy, alumni network, and the all-rounder pitch. Indira Gandhi went here. So did Gautam Gambhir, Shekhar Kapur, Amrita Singh. People in Delhi treat the Modernite tag as social currency, particularly among older Delhi families. The annual ModMUN is genuinely a big deal in Asia, and sports and performing arts are taken seriously, not as afterthoughts.
Academics are solid rather than spectacular. Board results are consistent, university placements are good. It is not the academic pressure cooker that DPS RK Puram is. One parent online, comparing the two, scored Modern lower on academics but higher on sports, infrastructure and overall feel, and called the junior-school teachers "best in Delhi." Quora threads from senior students grumble that some Class 11-12 teachers coast and assume you'll do tuition outside school. Worth assuming that's at least partly true.
Social culture is the thing to weigh up. The crowd skews privileged, well-connected, old-Delhi. According to one parent, "in middle-class society, people will not like that one's child is in Modern, because they will think we are spoiling the child." Another framed it as the best decision of their life that "could also be the worst decision for someone else." If your child thrives in confident, polished, somewhat networked peer groups, this is a feature. If not, look harder at Sanskriti or Vasant Valley.
One genuine blot: in 2022 the school demanded around 67,000 rupees from EWS-quota Class 11 students who had studied free since nursery, drawing a legal notice and bad press. The school sits on government-allotted land with conditions attached, so this matters. It has not derailed admissions demand, but it tells you something about institutional priorities.
Admissions are competitive at every entry point. Nursery is a lottery in practice. Lateral entry tests cover English, Maths, Science.
Bottom line: a strong, traditional, well-rounded Delhi school with serious sports and arts and a powerful old-boys/girls network. Not the hardest-driving academically. The peer environment is the variable that decides whether your child loves it or finds it a poor fit. Visit, watch the kids at break, trust your gut.

Reviews
- Modern School Barakhamba Road sits in a tier of its own in Delhi school discussion. and across Indian regional forums, commenters routinely name it as Delhi's most prestigious day school, often above DPS RK Puram, Sanskriti, Vasant Valley and the British School.
- One commenter from r/delhi said it was always their dream school for their children. Another, in a comparative thread, said the school's intake looks visibly wealthier than DPS, including DPS Mathura Road. A third grouped it with DPS RKP, Sanskriti and Vasant Valley as the elite-feeder bracket.
- Alumni references run heavy: cricketers, Bollywood figures and bureaucratic and political families repeatedly turn up in school commentary, and the alumni network is itself cited as a reason parents try for admission.
- Aggregator scores are consistent: around 4.4 of 5 on Indian schools platforms, with parents flagging academic rigour, co-curricular breadth and a CBSE board record.
- Negative signal is narrower but specific. Parents flag admissions selectivity and a perception that the school is money-making, and one r/gurgaon thread described the brand of cultural attitude attached to its alumni in unflattering terms.
- The school is a CBSE day-cum-boarding school founded in 1920 and located near Mandi House. Its auditorium is a recognised classical music venue in Delhi.
