A Roman Catholic boys' day school in Lavington founded in 1939, administered by the Archdiocese of Nairobi, with a long-running co-ed IB Diploma stream that admits girls from Year 12.

St Mary's, known to alumni as Saints, sits on around 85 acres in Lavington and runs a stacked credential menu: KCPE and KCSE for the Kenyan track, IGCSE, and a 40-plus-year IB Diploma programme that has been co-educational since the early 1980s. Roughly 50 students sit the IB Diploma each year, with around 90 percent moving on to university in the US, UK, Canada and South Africa. Facilities include three technology centres, science labs, art rooms, libraries, and a music centre with a recording studio.

The IB stream is what draws expat and internationally-minded Kenyan families. The KCSE route stays popular with parents who want the rigour and breadth of the Kenyan system. Model UN, World Scholars, sport and theatre run deep. The Catholic ethos is present and visible. Boys-only at the lower school is a hard line for some families.

  • Catholic day school in Westlands, founded 1939, with strong alumni loyalty in Nairobi.
  • Sits among the schools Kenyans cite as the social and confidence pipeline, not the academic-cram pipeline. One former student wrote that international and "good schools" rebuild a kid's idea of what success means after the rigid 8-4-4 system.
  • Same alum bluntly added that international schools in Kenya "are shit academically" , but said the social and personal-growth return makes it worth it for the families who pay.
  • Rugby identity is a real thing here. Old boys link the school to Blackrock College in Dublin and host one of Kenya's largest one-day school rugby tournaments.
  • Multiple curriculum offer (KCSE, IGCSE, IB DP); strong university placement claims come from the school, not from independent voices.
