One of England's leading independent boys' day and boarding schools, set on a 45-acre campus in South Croydon, founded in 1596 by Archbishop John Whitgift and run today as part of the John Whitgift Foundation.

Whitgift takes around 1,400 boys aged 10 to 18 and offers both A-levels and the IB Diploma at sixth form, regularly producing some of the strongest IB results in the UK with an average diploma score in the high 30s to low 40s. Toby Seth leads the school. Sporting and music facilities are exceptional, and the Foundation operates one of the most generous bursary programmes in the country.

Families describe a vibrant, big-school culture where boys are pushed to try widely and excel in something. The international diploma cohort is well regarded by US and continental universities. Scale is the main consideration: a large, busy institution where quieter boys can feel overawed. Day fees sit around £8,000 per term ex VAT, with full boarding meaningfully higher.

  • Public signal is strongest around academic pace, sport, facilities and the breadth of extracurricular opportunity. The school is repeatedly described as best suited to ambitious, energetic boys who can handle a demanding environment.
  • The specialist-review signal is positive on outcomes and opportunity, with particular weight on results, university destinations, sport and the scale of support available inside a large selective school.
  • The main caution is fit. Local discussion frames the wider foundation as powerful and sometimes controversial in Croydon, and families also compare the school closely with nearby alternatives by pupil temperament, especially sport versus music.
