An IB World School at the centre of the Mont Kiara expat enclave, running the IB PYP, MYP and DP alongside a US high school diploma.

MKIS opened in 1994 and serves Pre-K to Grade 12 with students from over 55 nationalities and a 95 percent expatriate teaching staff. The school is WASC accredited and authorised for all three IB programmes. The 2023 IB cohort averaged 38 points across 17 candidates, with one perfect 45 and seven scores above 40. Annual fees run roughly RM38,000 to RM128,000.

Families talk about MKIS as a small, walkable village school, with a high concentration of pupils living in the surrounding condos and a parent body that turns up for events. Teachers are seen as approachable and willing to give extra help, and the academic pace works well for motivated students. Two recurring criticisms: fees feel high for the size of the school and have risen in recent years, and middle school teacher turnover has been a persistent issue, with families noting that few teachers stay beyond two years.

  • MKIS is the American-curriculum reference point in Kuala Lumpur alongside ISKL, and parent and teacher discussion treats them as a pair. commenters call MKIS the second of the two big American schools, with ISKL more competitive on selectivity and MKIS more accessible.
  • Parents on multiple forum threads describe MKIS as the practical choice when ISKL is unavailable, including for families on the digital nomad pass which ISKL doesn't accept.
  • Pastoral feel comes up consistently: one ex-pupil who attended Grades 1-6 said the school was small enough to feel community-oriented; school-published parent quotes describe staff calling children by name.
  • IB results are concrete. The Class of 2023 had 17 IB Diploma graduates with an average score of 38, with one student scoring the full 45 and seven achieving over 40, well above the global average.
  • Recurring negatives are condition of the campus, package for staff, and post-Covid staff turnover. Teacher commentary calls the campus rundown, the package the lowest of the four big KL internationals, and health insurance very thin. Parents and staff agree the school took a hit during Covid and is rebuilding under a relatively new head.
  • Cost is also called out by parents, with fees in the same upper bracket as ISKL, GIS and BSKL at roughly RM72k a year and up.
  • Mont Kiara location is itself part of the value proposition: the neighbourhood is the expat-family core of KL, with multiple international schools in walking range.

Positives

  • IB Diploma outcomes. 2023 cohort averaged 38 with one 45 and seven over 40, well above the world average.
  • Pastoral and community feel. Smaller-school warmth repeatedly cited by parents and former pupils.

Considerations

  • Position vs ISKL. MKIS is the lower-selectivity American-curriculum alternative; many families pick it for practical reasons including visa eligibility.
  • Campus condition. Teachers describe the campus as rundown and in need of investment.
  • Staff package and turnover. Teachers say the package is the lowest of the four big KL internationals; school took a Covid-era hit and is rebuilding.
  • Fees. Sits in the same upper bracket as ISKL, GIS and BSKL at around RM72k a year and up.
