American International School of Johannesburg

The dominant international school in South Africa, with two campuses (Johannesburg and Pretoria), a dual American-IB track, and a community heavily weighted toward diplomatic and corporate expat families on fee-paid packages. Premium fees with a campus and program to match.

AISJ has been running since 1982 and follows the American school year, which alongside Lycée Jules Verne makes it a fit for families on northern-hemisphere postings. The Johannesburg campus is K-12, the Pretoria campus runs to Grade 8. Around 770 students across both sites, accredited by MSA and a member of AISA and ISASA. The IB Diploma is offered alongside AP, with recent cohorts averaging 33 points, above the world average.

The Johannesburg campus has on-site wetlands, a mini golf course, and facilities families notice immediately. Fees from ZAR 186,000 to over ZAR 700,000 sit at the top of the South African market, and most families have employer support. Parents value the diversity, strong learning-support provision, and ease of transition for kids moving between American and IB systems. Less obvious for self-funding local families.

• Diversity efforts visible publicly: school has hosted anti-racism panels and is referenced in posts as a school where Black students and staff are reasonably represented relative to other African international schools.
• Tuition reaches around USD 38,000 a year per one local thread, which puts it at the top of the Johannesburg market.
