The bilingual Buddhist school. Earth and bamboo buildings, 50-50 English and Thai in primary, and a curriculum built around the 12 Wise Habits drawn from Phra Ajahn Jayasaro.

Founded in 2011 by Yodphet Sudsawad on a campus of bamboo and rammed-earth pavilions among rice fields, about 15 minutes from town. British curriculum and IB Diploma at senior level, Thai national curriculum threaded through, sustainability and Buddhist principles in the daily fabric. Each primary class has both a Thai and an English teacher. Around 350 students, ages 2 to 19.

Families who want the philosophy delivered authentically tend to stay and rave. Parents praise the well-trained teachers, the nurturing atmosphere, and the academic rigour underneath the calm aesthetic. The mixed signal sits at the older end. Some families with older children have raised concerns about how the school handles adolescent behaviour and conflict, and a few have left for that reason. The fit question is real: families who want a conventional, high-pressure academic environment will find Panyaden a different proposition.

The school most people in Chiang Mai mean when they say "the bamboo school". Buddhist-values and sustainability sit at the centre, the campus in San Sai is built from bamboo and earth, and the curriculum runs IPC and IMYC into the IB Diploma. Long-tenured families and teachers come up often, as does the in-house fresh-air system that holds classroom AQI down through burning season. The qualifier is a small set of bullying-handling and admissions-responsiveness concerns that prompted at least one family to look elsewhere.

Positives

  • Eco campus and Buddhist ethos. Bamboo and rammed-earth buildings, twelve Wise Habits woven through daily life, a values-led tone that families describe as warm and grounded. The architecture has carried the school into Dezeen and ArchDaily, and parents tend to mention the feel of the place before they mention results.
  • Teaching and continuity. Long-serving teachers and families who have been on campus a decade or more come up repeatedly. Classes are small, support for dyslexia and similar needs is described as responsive, and the secondary side is reported as well-run by parents currently using it.
  • Burning-season air handling. Panyaden runs its own pre-cooled positive-pressure fresh-air system across the secondary buildings, brought in to keep indoor AQI green during the smoke months. Families weighing Chiang Mai as a base for a young child point to it as a reason the school stays on their list.
  • Curriculum and pathway. British primary through IPC and IMYC, a Pre-IB stretch in Years 10 and 11, then the IB Diploma. Bilingual Thai-English running through the early years. Sits alongside CMIS, Prem and Lanna in the small group of Chiang Mai schools families shortlist on curriculum rather than convenience.

Considerations

  • Bullying handling. A recent thread carried second-hand accounts of bullying not being managed well, with at least one family withdrawing and another choosing a different British-track school for the same fee. A current parent in the same thread pushed back and described the school as responsive. Pattern is not settled, but the concern is on the record.
  • Admissions responsiveness. Slow replies after exams and interviews come up in recent first-hand accounts. Other applicants describe the process as fine. Worth pinning down a single point of contact early if a timeline matters.
  • Location and commute. The campus sits in Namprae, Hang Dong side, with the secondary up the road. Families based around Hang Dong and Mae Hia find it easy. From Central Festival or the north of the city it is a long daily run, and that drops it off some shortlists on geography alone.
  • Fees. Annual tuition roughly THB 278,000 to 528,000 across the year groups, with IB DP Year 12 around THB 453,000. Cheaper than Bangkok IB schools, in line with the Chiang Mai IB-accredited cluster, and a scholarship route exists from Year 7 up through the Diploma.
