GEMS British School Al Rehab

Founded in 2001, GEMS British School Al Rehab is one of Cairo's oldest GEMS network schools, located in Rehab City in eastern New Cairo, serving around 1,000 students from Foundation Stage through Year 12 on the British National Curriculum with…

Long-running British school in Al Rehab City, opened in 2001 and now operated by GEMS Education. Strong IGCSE results sit alongside a noticeable shift in tone since the GEMS acquisition.

Often called TBS locally, the school sits on Talaat Mostafa Road inside Al Rehab and follows the English national curriculum to IGCSE, AS and A level. CIS and BSME accredited. Results have historically been among the stronger British-stream sets in Cairo.

Families who have been there through the ownership change describe a more commercial feel under GEMS, with complaints about teacher turnover, appeals on predicted IGCSE grades, and patchy responsiveness from administration. Sport happens off site at the Rehab Club rather than on a dedicated school campus, which some parents accept and others find limiting.

Useful for families already living in eastern Cairo who want a known British pathway and accept that the school is now part of a large chain. Worth visiting in person and asking current Year 10 and 11 parents about how the IGCSE year groups are running.

  • Online comment is dominated by teachers, not parents, and the picture is unfavourable.
  • Two posts describe the school in blunt terms. One contributor wrote that GEMS The British School Al Rehab "currently has many vacancies" and that the "huge staff turn over rings alarm bells," with the advice being to avoid the school. A separate post called it "Terrible school for teachers and students."
  • Independent directory write-ups echo a pre/post-GEMS narrative: the school had a strong reputation locally, with some of the higher IGCSE outcomes in Cairo, and a sub-set of parents say they remain happy with academics and pastoral care.
  • Other parent reviews on those directories flag a more commercial tone since the GEMS acquisition, complaints about unfulfilled promises, and unhappiness over downgraded predicted IGCSE grades with limited appeal.
  • Net signal is mixed-to-negative on staffing stability and management responsiveness, with academic results still cited as a reason families stay.
