The International Montessori School of Beijing
Reviews
The oldest dedicated international Montessori operation in Beijing, sat in the villa belt where Chaoyang meets Shunyi. Small by city standards, with a four-hundred-or-so student body drawn from across the expat compounds, and a programme that runs Montessori from toddlers up through primary, IB MYP in middle school, and a newer American high school pathway built with a California district. Families come for the dual-language stream and the close-knit feel. The wobble sits on the staff side, where leadership churn has been visible.
Positives
- Dual-language programme. Full bilingual Montessori from age three through grade six, with half the day in Chinese and half in English. The most committed Mandarin track among Beijing's Montessori options.
- Community feel. Around four hundred students across more than fifty nationalities. Parents describe a tight, family-style atmosphere with an active parents' association running social events and classroom support.
- Programme breadth. Authentic Montessori in early years and primary, IB MYP in middle school, and from 2025 a US high school pathway via a partnership with Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District in California. Few Montessori schools in Beijing carry students this far.
- Location. Villa-area campus on Jingmi Road at the Chaoyang-Shunyi boundary, opposite Beijing Riviera. Convenient for families in either Shunyi compounds or the eastern city, with bus routes both ways.
Considerations
- Leadership churn. Staff talk about frequent changes at the top, with the principal seat turning over repeatedly in recent years. The school does not name a head publicly on its current site.
- Direction and management. Staff-side feedback flags inconsistent direction and a chaotic management feel. Parent-facing impact is harder to read, but the absence of a settled head shows up in how decisions land term to term.
- Scale. A small school by Beijing international standards. The intimacy is real, but cohorts thin out fast in middle and upper grades, and the secondary offer is still maturing.
