The largest British international in the Barcelona area, operated by Cognita since 2007. Four campuses split across Castelldefels, the new BSB City site in central Barcelona, and Sitges. National Curriculum into IGCSE, then IB Diploma at the BSB Nexus pre-university campus.

Founded in 1958, BSB has grown fast under Cognita: it absorbed the International School of Barcelona Sitges in 2016, opened the Nexus pre-university campus in 2018, and recently expanded with BSB City. The school holds the BSO inspection grade of Outstanding in every category, the only Catalan school with that status. Roll is now above 2,000 across the campuses.

Parent voice is split, which the size makes inevitable. Families who like it praise the breadth of facilities, the BSO inspection record, and the IB results. The recurring critical thread is teacher turnover and consistency during the rapid expansion years, with some families reporting frequent supply cover and varying quality between year groups. Suits families who want a UK-track, English-medium school at scale; less right for those who want a small, settled feel.

One of the older British names in Catalonia, with a flagship Castelldefels site near the seafront, a sixth-form annex (Nexus) up the road, a primary in Sitges, and a newer city campus in Sarria-Sant Gervasi. Cognita-owned since 2007, and it shows in the polish and the scale. IB results sit comfortably above world average, BSO inspection is at the top of the scale, and parent feedback is generally warm on teaching and community. Less consistent ground: how well the same standards travel across four campuses, how SEN is handled, and how the size and growth feel from the inside.

Positives

  • Academic record. IBDP averages have held in the mid-thirties with 100% pass rates in recent years, and roughly a fifth of the cohort clearing 40 points. Cambridge A-Level and Pearson Edexcel run alongside the Diploma, so families get a real choice at sixteen rather than a single track.
  • Inspection and accreditation. Rated Outstanding in every category at the most recent BSO inspection in October 2024, which remains rare in Catalonia. It is the most visible external mark the school carries, and it is genuinely earned across the four campuses inspected.
  • Teaching and community. The most consistent praise lands on the teachers and the warmth of the parent community, particularly at the smaller Sitges primary. Families talk about kids being happy, knowing their teachers, and the broader programme of clubs and activities.
  • Facilities and campus choice. Castelldefels sits on a generous seafront site with serious sports provision. The city campus opened a new building in Sarria-Sant Gervasi in 2021 with shared access to the Club Tennis Barcino facilities next door. A further Maresme campus is due to open in 2026.

Considerations

  • Cognita ownership and scale. Part of the Cognita group since 2007, with nearly 2,000 pupils across the four current campuses. The corporate group feel comes through in the polish and the consistency of process. It also comes through in how big the school feels, and a recurring strand of parent comment treats decisions as commercially driven.
  • SEN and inclusion. Support for children with additional needs is the area where parent comment is least flattering, with some families saying provision did not match what was discussed at admission. Worth pressing on for any family arriving with a diagnosis or a recent assessment.
  • Pastoral handling and bullying. Pastoral feedback is mixed rather than uniformly positive. Older complaints about bullying being slow to resolve still surface occasionally, and a few parents tie this to how quickly the school has grown. More recent voices describe responsive form tutors and a tighter feel at the smaller campuses.
  • Fees and add-ons. Tuition sits in the upper-middle band for Barcelona international schools, with sibling discounts from the third child. Optional costs around bus, lunch and after-school activities are where parents tend to flag the bill creeping.
