Sarala Birla Academy

A boys-only boarding school on a 64-acre Bannerghatta Road campus, part of the Aditya Birla schools network and running ICSE alongside IGCSE and the IBDP in the senior years. Sport, music and the boarding rhythm get warm mentions from alumni and parents, and the school points to a 2024 Rhodes Global Scholar among its alumni. Set against that, parent commentary about ragging, senior-on-junior bullying and house-master supervision in the boarding houses is unusually pointed for a school of this profile, and the catering is fully vegetarian.

Positives

  • Boarding life and pastoral feel. Old boys describe SBA as a home away from home, with the four-house structure (Aditya, Bhaskar, Martand, Vivasvan) and the rhythm of full boarding credited for building independence.
  • Campus and facilities. 64 acres on Bannerghatta Road, an 18-bed infirmary with resident doctor and round-the-clock nursing, full power backup and 24-hour water. Rooms sleep four to six with attached bathrooms.
  • Sport, music and co-curriculars. Parents single out the music programme (tabla and Indian classical alongside Western), and the sport calendar carries the school into state and national meets. A 2024 Rhodes Global Scholar elect is an alumnus.
  • Academic spread. ICSE through Grade 10, then a choice between ISC and IBDP for the senior years, with IGCSE alongside. The IBDP cohort is small and the curriculum is described as demanding.

Considerations

  • Safety and discipline in the boarding houses. Parents flag ragging and senior-on-junior bullying, and one detailed account alleges a serious physical assault with house wardens present. Substance possession among boarders also comes up in parent commentary. These are isolated voices rather than a chorus, but the wording is graphic enough that they sit on the record.
  • Vegetarian-only catering. The dining hall serves vegetarian food only. Settles well with vegetarian families; less so for boys arriving from non-vegetarian households expecting more variety.
  • Parent-school channels. Parents mention the absence of a formal parent-teacher association, which leaves families relying on house staff and the school's own cadence for updates rather than a structured forum.
  • Fees and commitment. Full-boarding tuition runs into the high single-digit-to-low-double-digit lakhs annually, with admission packages around INR 12 lakh in the lower grades. There is no day or flexi option; the school is full boarding only.
