ISU is a member of the Dutch International Schools (DIS) network, which means tuition is partially funded by the Dutch government and fees are very low by international-school standards. The school enrols roughly 1,000 to 1,200 students and serves a community of more than 50 nationalities, drawn largely from Utrecht University, RIVM and the corporate cluster around the city.

Affordability and curriculum continuity are the headline strengths. ISU has been the single best-fit option for many Utrecht expats for years, with warm, approachable teachers and a friendly leadership team. The ongoing weakness has been facilities. Years of waiting for a permanent building have meant temporary premises, classrooms that run cold in winter and hot in summer, and limits on space for sports and the arts. SEND provision is stretched. For families who want a low-fee IB pathway and can live with the building, the school continues to deliver.

  • Dutch and expat parents recommend ISUtrecht as a comparatively affordable IB option, with one calling it 'a very decent school' at fees roughly a fifth of the British School in The Hague.
  • A 2021 thread from students themselves shows discontent with how the school handled IB exam routes during the pandemic, with sixth-formers feeling unprepared and unsupported on the decision.
  • International Schools Database aggregate is mixed across 8 reviews; long-term parents complain about facilities lagging during the school's relocation, with classrooms reportedly too cold in winter and too warm in summer.
  • A frequently mentioned structural issue is the school's near-monopoly position in Utrecht, which several parents link to weaker administrative responsiveness.
