In brief
A Dutch publicly funded bilingual school in the Esprit Scholengroep, set up in 2014 to give every child, regardless of background, a route through Dutch and international education. IB World School since 2018.
Around 980 students from age 4 to 18, drawn from more than 70 nationalities. Primary is genuinely bilingual, three days in Dutch and two in English. Upper secondary splits into Dutch VMBO-TL and HAVO tracks alongside the English-language IB Diploma. Parental contribution is low at around 225 EUR a year, with extra IB fees on top.
The mixed academic profile is the thing to plan for. Because DENISE intentionally takes in a wide range of abilities and language levels, teachers spend significant time on language acquisition and inclusion, and stronger students can find the pace gentle. Best fit for families staying in the Netherlands long-term who want their child rooted in Dutch as well as in English.
Reviews
- The most useful independent voice is a multi-year expat-parent blog whose children attended both phases. Primary reviews are warm: "Both of my children had very positive experiences going to DENISE. They had friends from all over the world, and felt safe, respected, and eager to go to school". Multilingual support and a focus on the whole child are repeatedly praised.
- The same blog flags a recurring administrative pattern. One parent said "nobody ever seems to really know what is going on", important announcements get buried in long PDFs, and the school calendar is described as unreliable.
- Secondary reviews are weaker. Several families have moved children out after one or two years, with the parent saying "these teens have found themselves behind in multiple subjects, sometimes even needing tutoring to catch up to their peers".
- The IB Diploma pathway is described as a moving target, with the school's own communication on availability changing repeatedly. For non-Dutch-speaking families this matters: secondary students are taught in Dutch for years before switching to English.
- Dutch inspection currently rates VWO and VMBO-T as Sufficient and HAVO as not yet judged. Treated as small, warm, internationalist primary; secondary needs more diligence.
