Curriculum
British

A British curriculum school in Al Shamkha that opened in 2016 and serves a predominantly Emirati student body. Principal Joanna Povall was named TES International Schools Principal of the Year 2024, and the school has built a reputation for steady improvement under her leadership.

The curriculum follows the National Curriculum for England within the UAE cultural and religious framework, leading to IGCSE and A Levels. Around 85 percent of students are Emirati, and the school explicitly positions itself as a British curriculum option for local families rather than the embassy circuit.

Facilities are purpose-built and include a swimming pool, sports pitch, science labs, and music rooms. Fees sit at the lower end of the British curriculum bracket in Abu Dhabi. A reasonable choice for Emirati and Arab families wanting British rigour without leaving Al Shamkha, and for expats happy in a mostly local peer group.

A British-curriculum school in Al Shamkha, opened in 2016, that has climbed steadily under Joanna Povall, principal since 2022 and named TES International Principal of the Year in 2024. The cohort is overwhelmingly Emirati, the fee point sits mid-market, and the prevailing feel is warm and family-oriented. The early years run hot; the upper school is the part still finding its level.

Positives

  • Pastoral tone and family feel. Parents describe a caring, supportive environment with teachers who know the children. The principal's CHASE Kindness framework runs through the school's day-to-day culture and lands in the way staff talk to families.
  • Early years and primary. KG is the strongest part of the school, rated Very Good in the most recent inspection. Primary English and Arabic have improved, and learning attitudes across the lower phases are consistently flagged as a strength.
  • Leadership and direction. Joanna Povall is the engine of the recent improvement story. The school holds a Good ADEK rating, BSO accreditation, and a sense of clear direction from the top. A new head of secondary joined in 2025 to push the upper school forward.
  • Parent communication. Open evenings, regular updates and accessible class teachers come up repeatedly in parent commentary. Families with siblings tend to stay across phases.

Considerations

  • Upper-school attainment in core subjects. Maths, science and English in the middle and secondary phases have slipped to Acceptable in the most recent inspection. Parents weighing the school for IGCSE and A-Level should expect a school still building its track record at that end.
  • Stretch for the strongest students. Higher-attaining pupils do not always get consistent challenge. Questioning and extension tasks are areas the school itself has flagged for development.
  • Staff turnover and middle leadership. Succession at middle-leadership level is a known soft spot. Turnover among teaching staff has been raised as something the school needs to settle if the recent gains are to stick.
  • Additional learning needs. Provision for students with additional needs is improving but still uneven. Families with specific SEND requirements tend to find the picture clearer in conversation with the school than on paper.
